On 23 February 2023, the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Montreal, Eugene Czolij, headed a Ukrainian delegation to Quebec City for the commemoration by the Government of Quebec of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people to Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine.
The Premier of Quebec, François Legault, greeted the Ukrainian delegation at the National Assembly of Quebec and assured it that Quebec will continue to support the Ukrainian people.
The Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Montreal, Eugene Czolij, and the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Quebec Provincial Council, Michael Shwec, thanked the Premier of Quebec for this support and the assistance to approximately 11,000 Ukrainians temporarily displaced in Quebec.
The National Assembly of Quebec then unanimously adopted a Motion in support of the Ukrainian people tabled by the Member of the National Assembly for Rosemont, Vincent Marissal.
This Motion provides:
“That the National Assembly reaffirms the inalienable right of the Ukrainian people to their territorial integrity;
That it declares the military aggression of Ukraine by Russia as defying international law, namely the military aggression on the civilian population, as well as its critical infrastructure;
That, like the House of Commons of Canada, it denounces the acts of a genocidal character committed against the Ukrainian people, which have been reported by the media;
That it welcomes in Quebec all Ukrainians who are temporarily displaced, while asking the Governments of Quebec and Canada to do everything in their power to facilitate their arrival in the country;
That it reaffirms the historical character of its relationship of friendship with the Ukrainian diaspora in Quebec;
That it salutes the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people and the courage of the opposition movement to the war in Russia;
Finally, the National Assembly observes a minute of silence in memory of the victims.”
This Motion was followed by a minute of silence by the National Assembly of Quebec in memory of the victims of Russia's all-out war against Ukraine.
